Extractive Distillation of Ethanol-Ethyl Propionate Azeotrope with Para-Xylene

Abstract Para-Xylene was selected as a proper extractant through COSMO-SAC model to separate ethanol-ethyl propionate azeotrope, and its effect was verified by vapor-liquid equilibrium experiment. The results show that para-xylene can separate ethanol-ethyl propionate azeotrope. The process of continuous extractive distillation for the ternary system of ethanol+ethyl propionate+para-xylene was simulated by Aspen Plus, and the proper process parameters were obtained:in extractive distillation column, ideal stage number is 60, number of feed stage is 50, number of solvent stage is 25, reflux ratio is 7 and ratio of solvent to feed is 0.8; in solvent recovery column, ideal stage number is 30, number of feed stage is 11, reflux ratio is 6. Under the optimized parameters, mole fraction of ethanol and ethyl propionate can reach 99.85% and 99.0%, respectively.
