Abstract To develop a feasible design method for a multi-effect batch distillation column (MEBAD), constant holdup model was built and the coefficient of approaching equilibrium was used to examine the degree of approaching equilibrium under total reflux for MEBAD. On the basis of comprehensive consideration of the number of stages and operation time required, the criterion for the end of total reflux operation in design was proposed. Finally, the design method for the emerging column was given, which could fulfill the separation task perfectly.
