Study of Graft-Copolymerization of Butyl Acrylate onto Gelatin ——Ⅰ. The Reaction Mechanism and Rate Equations
Li Zhichong, Fu Zhifeng
The grafting of butyl acrylate (BA) onto gelatin, using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as redox initiator in aqueous medium, has been studied. In this paper the reaction mechanism of graft-copolymerization is discussed, and the rate equations of the reaction are proposed. The activation energies of graftcopolymeriZation(Eg), homopolymerization (E_h) and total polymerization (Ep)have been calculated. In order to know more about the reaction mechanism, the disappearing rat9 of Ce(Ⅳ)during the period of the reaction have also been observed.

Development of Chemical Process Technology and Chemistry——Significane of Syngas Utilization
Zhang Jianhou
After short mentioning the influence of chemical engineering and computer application on the progress of chemical process technology, the history of the parallel developments of chemical industry and chemistry, as illustrated with the progress of organic chemical industry, and the characteristies of the synthetic reactions for petroleum chemicals in the mid period of this century are briefly reviewed. Following a touch of the current conditions of chemical industry in western countries, the prospective developments of the basic organic chemical industry are partially presented. Through discussion on the reaction paths with syngas as starting material to produce organic chemicals, the significance of research on syngas utilization is emphasized. Finally, it is pointed out that uninterrupted research and development works for industrial chemical reactions and products are the foundation to keep chemical industry always full of vigor and progressing toward technology of high level.
