Abstract The Fractal Theory was introduced into gas\|solid catalytic reaction system and a new characteristic parameter d\-R,the reaction dimension, was provided to evaluate the degree of structure sensitivity of the gas\|solid catalytic reaction. The chemisorption dimension of Ni/-Al\-2O\-3 and the reaction dimension of the ethylene vapor hydrogenation on Ni/-Al\-2O\-3 were determined. The experimental results show that the chemisorption dimension of Ni varied with its diamerter, and d \-C=2.150.05 when the particle size of Ni is greater than 40 and smaller than 60 angstrom. The reaction dimension d \-R=2.00-0.05 shows that the ethylene vapor hydrogenation on Ni/-Al\-2O\-3 is structure insensitive and the catalytic activity is independent of distribution of nickel crystal. All of this show that it is possible and suitable to use the reaction dimension to determine the degree of the structure sensitivity of a gas-solid reaction.
