Abstract Hydrotalcite was surface modified by using sodium stearate. The factors of different treatment conditions such as temperature, time, amount of modifier, were analyzed. X-ray and FTIR were performed to characterize the hydrotalcites before and after treated. Results show the activation index was a fairly well coefficient to denote the treating effect and this promoted the application of this novel flame-retardant in industry.
