Abstract Kaolin treated by NaOH and HCl solution respectively was tested by pyridine-TPD and activity of catalytic cracking. The effects of acid type and surface acidity on cracking and desulphurization activity of the treated Kaolin were studied. It was shown that the alkali-modified Kaolin was better than acid-modified Kaolin in respect of yield of gasoline and desulphurization, the acid site distribution on the surface was the main effect on desulphurization through the pyridine-TPD test. The effect of n(SiO_2)/n(Al_2O_3) of the alkali-modified Kaolin on the yield of gasoline and desulphurization was analyzed. It is important to reduce sulfur content of gasoline and to decrease environmental pollution.
