Abstract Discodermolide a multiple-hydroxyl--lactone compound,is isolated from marine sponge discodermia dissolute.Similar to paclitaxel, discodermolide is also a microtubule-stabilizing agent and shares an overlapping tubulin binding site with paclitaxel. However, discodermolide is better water-resolvable and more potent than paclitaxel, and it is also active in taxol-resistant cell lines. So discodermolide is determined to be a potential anticancer-drug and attracts many researchers' attention.Based on the references in recent years, the mechanism of action, synthesis, biological activity, modeling study and the application prospect of discodermolide are reviewed in this paper.
