Abstract To explore environmentally benign desulfurizer that was recyclable and greener, the solubility of SO2 in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide ([BMIM]OH), the effect of temperature on the absorption and desorption and the recyclability for the pure and supported ionic liquid had been studied. It was found that the equilibrium absorption amount of SO2 could be up to 1.84 mols per mole of ionic liquid at 25℃ and 0.1 MPa. The dissolved amount of SO2 in[BMIM]OH decreased as temperature increased, and the absorbed SO2 could be desorbed by means of heating. The average desorption rate could achieve 99.3% and an average 1.47 mols of SO2 could be separated per mole of ionic liquid for a 6 cycles' operation. The ionic liquid supported on porous silica gel showed good absorption and desorption capacity, and the average desorption rates could reach 96.6% for 4 cycles' operation. It is hopeful for[BMIM]OH to be applied in separation and recovery of SO2 gas in industrial process.
