Abstract Rotary energy recovery device(RERD), as the energy saving equipment of seawater desalination system, has a great significance on reducing the power consumption and permeate cost of the system. In this paper, a new motor-driven RERD was designed and manufactured, and a complete SWRO desalination system was also established in order to evaluate the performances of the device. When the RERD can satisfy well the requirement of industrial application, we made a on-site testing about performances of RERD coupled with SWRO system. The experimental results show that at the operating condition of RERD capacity 13 m3/h, the rotating speed 500 r/min and the working pressure 6.0 MPa, the leakage of the device is about 0.57 m3/h and energy recovery efficiency of the device can reach 91.2%. When the operating capacity of the RERD is increased to 16 m3/h, the flows and pressures of the fluids in and out of the device almost keep constant, the energy recovery efficiency is slightly increased to about 92.5%.
