Abstract Two series of bisthiourea derivatives 6a—d and 7a—d were synthesized and their gelling properties were checked. The results showed that 6a—d had stronger gelation ability than 7a—d. The structures of gels were investigated using concentrationdependent SEM,1H NMR, FT-IR and XRD. It was found that intermolecular hydrogen bonds were the main driving force for the gelation. The results of XRD suggested that the dry gels of 6c had columnar hexagonal structure while 7c was layered.
