Abstract Ti-based RuxIr1-xO2 coated anodes were prepared by sol-gel method with the addition of organic additives, such as tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH), tetrapropyl ammonium bromide (TPABr) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), to the sols. The surface morphology, electrochemical properties and stability of anodes were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), cyclic voltammetric (CV), polarization measurement and accelerated electrolysis test. It was found that the addition of TEAOH to the sols could increase significantly the real surface area of coatings and decrease the polarization of electrodes, resulting in the improvement of electrochemical activity while the high stability was kept.
