Preparation and Characterization of StarShaped Hydrogenated HSSIBR

Abstract The starshaped styreneisoprenebutadiene ternary random copolymer SSIBR was synthesized using the anionic polymerization method with divinylbenzene(DVB) as coupling agent. The SSIBR was hydrogenated and HSSIBR was obtained with the nickel naphthenate(Ni)/triisobutyl aluminum(Al) catalyst system, while the temperature was 60 ℃, hydrogenated pressure was 4 MPa and the reaction time was 4 hours. The effect of molecular weight and DVB/Li content of SSIBR on coupling efficiency and the hydrogenation degree of SSIBR were investigated in details. In this work, 1HNMR, TGA, DSC and XRD were used to evaluate the HSSIBR. Meanwhile, the HSSIBR was investigated as viscosity index improvers in oil. It is proved that the coupling efficiency of SSIBR can reach 86.8% using DVB as coupling agent, the coupling efficiency declines with the increase of molecular weight; the initial decomposition temperature of HSSIBR raises 55 ℃ compared with SSIBR and the heat resistance and the aging resistance are improved obviously; the shearing stability of HSSIBR as viscosity index improvers is improved and the low temperature performance increases significantly.
