Abstract A novel grafting copolymer (CDA-g-PMMA) was obtained by means of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) grafting poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) onto cellulose diacetate (CDA) backbone. The structure and properties of CDA-g-PMMA were characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, DSC, XRD and GPC. The results of DSC and XRD show that the melting temperature and crystallinity of the copolymer are lowered. In addition, the plasticity of CDAgPMMA is better than CDA due to the introduction of PMMA. The Mw/Mn of CDA-g-PMMA is effectively controlled by ATRP.
