Abstract To solve problem of low recovery, large amount and substandard wastewater emission of n-butanol recycling equipment of mother solution at a Qingdao dye factory,a modified separation technology of heterogeneous azeotropic distillation using water as entrainer was proposed for separation of the azeotropic mixture of 1-butanol and water. The PRO/Ⅱ software was used to simulate and optimize the separation process. The influence of operation parameters on the consumption of cooling water and steam were investigated. The calculated results showed that the recovery rate was increased from 95% to 98%,and the discharge of wastewater was improved to meet the emission standard. The calculated results were close to the experimental data, which were useful for the industrial design and improvement.
