Abstract Organic amines modified ZnO was prepared by the sol-gel method. The photocatalytic performance of organic aminesmodified ZnO sample was studied using ultraviolet lamp as illumination device and methyl orange solution as the model pollutant. The effects of amount of organic amine,  gelling temperature, stirring time and calcination temperature on the photocatalytic performance of ZnO were investigated. The results showed that the optimal modifier was diethanol amine. The optimal preparation condition of diethanol aminemodified ZnO is: the optimal molar ratio of modifier to ZnO of 0.5∶1, the gel temperature of 80 ℃, the gel time of 1.5 h, the calcination temperature of 500 ℃. Compared with ZnO without modifier, the degradation rate of methyl orange using diethanol aminemodified ZnO is doubled.
