Abstract A water soluble chitosan derivative with quaternary ammonium salt,N-(2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium) chitosan chloride(HTCC) was prepared.IR spectra revealed that the substitution reaction occured mainly on the amine groups of chitosan.Flocculation of HTCC on tannin,one of the main foreign matter in herb extraction liquid was explored.The result showed that HTCC has stronger coagulating ability than that of chitosan on removing tannin.Moreover,HTCC has a wide of dosage application range,which is favorable for industrial application.
