Abstract All-solid-state lithium metal batteries have strong safety and stability, are an ideal selection to replace traditional lithium-ion batteries as next-generation energy storage devices. However, compared with liquid electrolytes, solid-state electrolytes have low ionic conductivity, which is still a key impediment to the rapid development of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries. This paper reviews the ion transport mechanisms of different types of solid electrolytes, summarizes the improvement strategies and the latest research progress in enhancing the conductivity of solid electrolytes, and concludes the technical routes to improve the ion transport performance of solid electrolytes, making an outlook to the design and development of new types of solid electrolytes in the future.
