Abstract Blending modification of PVDF membrane is the most efficient way which can be applied to an industrial scale production. The incorporation of inorganic nanoparticles has been extensively studied due to its simplicity. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-titania (TiO2) composite hollow fiber membranes were prepared by phase inversion process. The microstructure, crystalline phase, uniformity, thermal stability, mechanical strength, hydrophilicity, ultrafiltration performance and antifouling ability of the membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersion of X-ray (EDX), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical property test, contact angle measurement and ultrafiltration (UF) experiment, respectively. Compared to the pure PVDF membrane, the performances of composite membranes were improved greatly. When the mass fraction of TiO2 was 2% (by weight of PVDF), pure water flux increased from 348 L/(m2·h) of the PVDF membrane to 377 L/(m2·h),rejection of bovine serum albumin (BSA) increased from 68% to 90%. Moreover, mechanical property, hydrophilicity and antifouling property were enhanced effectively.
