Abstract Two V-P-O catalysts used for production of maleic anhydride from normal butane were prepared in different ways and thoroughly investigated. The results shows that the preparation method significantly causes the change of phase composition, pore size distribution and specific surface area, but has little effect on its morphology. It was discovered that the active phase of the catalyst for oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride is just the phase(VO)_2 P_2O_7, and increase of pore volume with pore size100～2000A is advantageous to its catalytic activity.
