The Characterization of Size and Shape of Dispersed Phase in Polymer Blend

Abstract In this paper a method of particle size measurement introduced into the size and shape measurement of dispersed phase in polymer blend is found feasible. The particle size distribution was obtained through computer's processing the SEM photographs of polymer blend(PP/PA1010)broken surface after brittle failure and counting particle numbers. It is found that the statistics results on three types of equivalent diameters are coincident with the normal probability function, and then their distribution functions were reached. A parameter, or namely shape factor �� W= d C/ d F, is determined to characterize the shape of particle. In addition, the effects of different etching methods on the measurement results and the error source were discussed.
