Abstract Mesitylene is important and applied extensively in preparation of fine chemicals. The developments of the production technology of Mesitylene are reviewed.A new technologyThe combination of isomerization and alkylation used in producing high purity Mesitylene and Dureneis reported.Isomerization can get more mesitylene but the separation becomes difficult because of the accumulation of methylethlbenzene;alkylation can eliminate methylethlbenzene but the yield of Mesitylene is lower than Durene. Therefore,it is good to combine Isomerization and alkylation. In the separating process of products,a novel operation of batch distillationthe conbination of varying pressure and top accumulation is proposed and used efficiently. The separating efficiency is increased, the operating time is shortened and production cost is reduced greatly. This advanced technique has been industrialized successfully with large profits and 600t Mesitylene/y has been produced with a purity of 98.5%.
