Abstract Ultrafiltration as a typical membrane technology has important application value in the preparation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Brief introduction and comments is given centering on the following issues:the basic principles and feature, the application feasibility and illustration, the existing problems and future outlook. It points out ultrafiltration has considerable technology advantage in the separation and purification of the effective sites and effective components from TCM extract. The key to the efficient application of ultrafiltration in TCM preparation includes designing and manufacturing specific industry- scale membrane devices, formulating the quality control criteria for the membrane processes and products, finding the optimum insertion point of membrane technology in he whole production system.
