Abstract The present article reviews recent advances in synthesis of biodegradable polyesters, which include aliphatic polyester and polyester containing aromatic constituents,by polycondensation from the standpoint of molecular design. The synthesis of poly(lactic acid) is mainly described and so is that of polyesters from renewable natural resources.Meanwhile the biodegradability of synthetic polyesters is also discussed in relation to the molecular structure.
