Abstract A sulphonate Gemini surfactant(Gemini-A) was synthesized from nonylphenol(NP)and formaldehyde and its structure was confirmed by elementary analysis and IR.Critical micelle concentration(cmc) and surface tension of Gemini-A were obtained from surface tension curves.They were 0.141 mmol/L and 33.51 mN/m respectively.The wettability of Gemini-A was studied by measuring the relative contact angle of the aqueous solution on the microscope glass slice.Solubilization of Gemini-A was investigated and compared with the traditional surfactants.Results showed that the aqueous solution of Gemini-A had high surface activities and high solubilization and it was a good surfactant for third times of oil extraction.
