Abstract Poly(L-lactide)(PLLA) and poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) have been widely used as biomedical materials because of their good biocompatibility. However, clinical applications of PLLA have sometimes interfered with the high hydrophobic and lacking of reactive site.PVA is inexpensive compared with PLLA,and both hydrophilic and high flexible. Here the blends of PLLA/PVA/PLCA were prepared by solution casting. The copolymer of lactic acid and citric acid(PLCA) was added to improve the compatibility and hydrolysis rate of PLLA/PVA binary blends. The interactions between PLLA and PVA were investigated by FT-IR spectrum and the mechanical properties were also discussed. The results showed that compatibility of PLLA/PVA was improved and the mechanical strength was enhanced.
