Abstract Nanometer magnesium hydroxide was prepared by ammonia method under the atmospheric pressure. The influences of pH of ammonia, concentration of MgCl_2, rate of ammonia addtion, reaction temperature and dispersant dosage were studied. Based on the test results of XRD and SEM, the optimal technological conditions for nanometer magnesium hydroxide are as follows: the pH of ammonia is 14; the concentration of MgCl_2 is 0.5 mol/L; the rate of adding ammonia is 2.0 mL/min; the reaction temperature is 50 �桪60 �� and the time is 60 min; the dispersant dosage is 2% weight of MgCl_2; the ideal solvent is mixture of ethanol and water which volume ratio is 1��2��1��1.
