Abstract Carbon dots (CD) were synthesized from citric acid using a hydrothermal method, and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) were prepared from chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) with sulfur-containing hyperbranched polyamide-amines as template and reducing agent. Then, the double-emitting fluorescent probes (CD-AuNCs) were obtained by mixing carbon dots and gold nanoclusters. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that the particle diameters of CD both were about 2 nm and dispersed uniformly. The effect of pH on the fluorescence performance of CD-AuNCs was investigated. It was found that the fluorescence of CD-AuNCs reached the strongest at pH=6, and CD-AuNCs responsed sensitively to tetracyclines (TCs) at this pH. The CD-AuNCs probe is not only highly selective, but also has the advantages of a wider linear range and a higher sensitivity than the single CD probe.
