Abstract The azeotropic system of methyl ethyl ketone(MEK)-water was separated by extraction. The liquidliquid equilibrium of the ternary system of methyl ethyl ketone-water-(1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate) was measured. The liquid-liquid equilibrium data were correlated by NRTL activity coefficient model and the binary interaction parameters were obtained. The extraction process was simulated using ChemCAD simulation software with ionic liquid as solvent. The effects of the number of theoretical stages and solvent ratio(the ratio of the molar flow rate of solvent to feed) on the extraction process were investigated. The optimal operation parameters were obtained by the sensitivity analysis, and the purity of MEK could reach 0.999 4 in such conditions, and the ionic liquid was able to be recycled after recovery.
