Abstract During a charge/discharge cycle of LiFePO4 as a cathode material of a lithiumion battery, lithium moves following a curved onedimensional chain and its distribution along the [010] direction was clearly visualized by both theoretical calculations and experimental confirmations. Thus LiFePO4 with short b-axis lengths and crystal orientation along the ac facet will facilitate the Li-ion diffusion by reducing the diffusion length inside the crystals. In this paper, controllable synthesis methods for such oriented LiFePO4 have been summarized.
