Abstract As a fascinating environmental friendly energy storage and conversion system, supercapacitor possesses many advantages over other energy storage devices, which bridges the gap between traditional capacitors and Lithium-ion batteries, and could effectively provide a green solution for the energy and environmental crisis such as fossil fuel depletion and pollution. Following a brief introduction of the fundamental principle, application, current status and characteristics of the supercapacitors, we review the research development of electrode materials for supercapacitor with an emphasis on carbon-based materials.
