Abstract The coagulation properties of bathing seawater were investigated by using iPDA (intelligent Particle Dispersion Analyzers) and Turbiscan Stability Analyzers. The orthogonal test was designed to optimize the coagulation conditions, and removal efficiencies of the main pollutants in bathing seawater were also discussed. By comparison, the coagulation effect of aluminum sulfate (AS) was better than other inorganic flocculants. The size and the setting property of the formed flocs were affected by flocculant dosage. The removal rates for pollutants of bathing seawater increased by combining aluminum sulfate and cationic polyacrylamide. The optimum coagulation conditions were obtained: the dosages of 50 mg/L and 0.5 mg/L for AS and PAM, 250 r/min for 2.5 min, 60 r/min for 20 min and setting time for 25 min. The removal rates of turbidity, LAS and CODCr were 93.13%, 74.64% and 42.92% respectively.
