Abstract The metal ion modified anionic surfactant templated mesoporous silica (AMS-2) materials were used as adsorbents to remove the dimethyl sulfide (DMS) which was considered to be the most difficultly removed organic sulfide at ambient conditions in the fuel cell industry. The performance of these M-AMS-2 materials which were prepared by changing different metal ion solutions, reaction time, concentration and volume of the modified solutions, calcination temperature and so on as DMS adsorbents was tested using a dynamic breakthrough test in the fixed bed. It has been proved that the capacities for DMS removal can reach to 9.811 1 and 14.250 8 mg/g of Cu-AMS-2 and Ag-AMS-2 materials respectively. Comparing the cost of the Cu-AMS-2 and the Ag-AMS-2 materials, the Cu-AMS-2 material will be applied widely in the future.
