Abstract H2 pulse chemisorption, N2 adsorption and TPR-MS were adopted to test structure properties of active carbon (AC) treated with nitric acid. Effects of nitric acid treatment on AC pore structure and chemical composition were studied. It was indicated that the amount of oxygenfunctional group was considerably increased for the AC which was pretreated by nitric acid. As the support of Ru/AC catalyst, it was found that there was strong interaction between Ru species and oxygenfunctional groups which significantly influenced the dispersion of Ru and apparently improved the catalytic activity of Ru/AC for hydrogenation of n-butanone.
