Abstract Considering the problem of nonuniform crystal morphology and agglomeration of Azlocillin acid (ALPC) in the production process, effects of ultrasound on the crystal morphology of Azlocillin acid were studied. Firstly, the metastable zone of waterALPC system and the formation mechanism of crystal habit affected by ultrasound were analyzed, and the phenomena were explained through monitoring the change number of crystallization process by FBRM (Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement). Then, in order to optimize the crystallization technology, factors such as initial concentration, dropping rate and agitation speed were investigated in ultrasound environment to determine their effects on the formation of ALPC, and the products were characterized by using optical microscopy, scanning electron and crystal particle size analyzer. Results show that the introduction of ultrasound can improve the crystal habit and size distribution of ALPC and decrease the agglomeration of ALPC under the optimum conditions, which are highly promising for the industrial production.
