Abstract According to the theory of sonochemisty, particles in the ultrasound field can promote the effect of the ultrasonic cavitation. In this work, aluminium foil erosion method was used to measure the distribution of the ultrasonic cavitation field which had been added with active carbons or alumina in advance. Useful result can be derived by analyzing the image of the erosion pattern with the software of MATLAB. The results indicate that the particles added in the ultrasonic cavitation field can not only enhance the intensity of the cavitation phenomenon but also improve the uniformity of the cavitation field. The improvement of the ultrasonic cavition intensity by active carbon granule was higher than that by active carbon powder. The effect of alumina was better than active carbon in the situation of high particle content.
