Abstract A novel grafting copolymer (CDA-g-PMMA) was obtained by means of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) grafting poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) onto cellulose diacetate (CDA) backbone. The structure and properties of CDA-g-PMMA were characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, DSC, XRD and GPC. The results of DSC and XRD show that the melting temperature and crystallinity of the copolymer are lowered. In addition, the plasticity of CDAgPMMA is better than CDA due to the introduction of PMMA. The Mw/Mn of CDA-g-PMMA is effectively controlled by ATRP.
