Abstract The binary copolymer of styrene(St)maleic anhydride(MA) was synthesized with AIBN as initiator and toluene as solvent. The influences of polymerization temperature, initiator dosage, solvent dosage and ratio of styrene to maleic anhydride on polymer relative molecular mass were discussed. The different relative molecular mass copolymer were modified by esterification and used in the viscosity reduction of Tahe heavy oil. The experimental results showed that the copolymer with intrinsic viscosity about 85 mL/g and the content of MA at 30% had the best effect, with viscosity reduction rate of 44.08%. To get the above products, the suitable experimental condition was : reaction temperature was 70 ℃, initiator dosage was 0.2%, solvent dosage was 60%, n(St)∶nMA)=2∶1.
