Abstract N,N-dimethyl-N-(2-hydroxy-3-o-nonyl phenoxy)propane ammonium(2 -hydroxy) propyl sulfobetaine was synthesized by 2-hydyoxy-3-chloro propanesulfate, dimethylamine, nonylphenol and epichlorohydrin as raw materials. The optimal synthesizing conditions of nonylphenol epoxy propyl ether were determined by orthogonal experiment. The structure of the end product was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, and the surface tension and critical micelle concentration(cmc)of zwitterionic surfactant were also determined by dropping  volume method. The values of cmc and surface tension at cmc(γcmc)of the surfactant 9.12×10-4 mol/L and 27.87 mN/m,respectivelyThe emulsifying performance of the surfactant was also investigated at 45 ℃
