Abstract Leanburn technology can not only improve fuel economic efficiency but also reduce CO2 emission. However, in leanburn exhaust, there exists excess oxygen, which accelerates the catalytic oxidation of reductants, and therefore decreasing efficiency of NOx reduction over the conventional threeway catalysts. At present, there are mainly three kinds of catalytic technology for leanburn NOx removal, namely NO direct decomposition, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and NOx storage and reduction (NSR). In this paper, the leanburn combustion technique is briefly introduced, and the catalytic technology for leanburn NOx removal is systematically reviewed.
