Abstract In order to improve the traditional Sintered-glass diaphragm cell used for liquid diffusion, preliminary investigation has been made on the applicability of porous metallic membrane. It has been found that a metallic membrane with openings of average radius of 1.42 and thickness of 100 can be successfully used for such purpose. The diffusion coefficients determined by the metallic diaphragm cell for the water-ethanol and ethanol-carbon tetrachloride systems at 25.00 are in agreement with those published in literature. The time of determination has been reduced from 24 days as usually required for sinter-glass diaphragm cell to 1.54 hrs. for the present cell. Diffusion coefficients have also determined at 25.00 by the present cell for benzene-carbon tetrachloride and propanol-carbon tetrachloride systems with experimental error less than 1.8% |
