Abstract The study on the catalyst and reaction mechanism of the synthesis of methanol and higher alcohols has drawn much attention in recent years. Better understanding of the relationship between catalyst preparation, structure and catalytic behaviour has been promoted. Searching for precursors with structures in which the components have intimate contact and are uniformly dispersed and for techniques to prepare them, such as Feitknecht compounds and spenils, has been worked on. The concept that uniform distribution of proper amount of alkli metal ionsoon Cu-based catalyst surface is favourable to enhance both activity and selectivity to form higher alcohols has been generally accepted. Yet there are still various views on the active site and the mechanism of the catalytic reaction. Many different explanations of the role of alkli metal ion and oxidizing agent such as CO_2 and H_2O in the reaction process have been given. This paper reviews the recent advances in the above mentioned aspects with emphasis on the of development of Cu-based catalysts itself and on the understanding of the active site and the reaction mechanism.
