Abstract Material selection of liquid crystalline (LC)membranes as functional gas permselective membranes is firstly summarized. The permselectivities of oxygen compared with nitrogen, of hydrocarbon isomers and of carbon dioxide are systematically reviewed. It isshown that LC membranes as oxygen enrichment membranes, as molecular filtration membranes for hydrocarbon isomers, as carbon dioxide enrichment membranes and as gas-barrier membranes will play an important role in medical field, petrochemical and packaging industries and agriculture.
