Abstract The effect of the modification with silica alumina gel on the adsorption of heavy metal and sinking property for bentonite and the adsorption of organic poison for CTMBA bentonite were investigated in this work. The modified bentonites were analyzed with XRD and IR. The results indicated that the modification, which happened on the edges of bentonites, enhanced their adsorption of cobalt and the sinking ability. The gel improved the adsorption selectivity when the CTMBA bentonites were used to adsorb organic compounds in water.
