Abstract In this study, magnetic biochar was modified using (CH3COO)2Zn to prepare modified magnetic biochar MBC600. The magnetic biochar samples before and after modification was characterized and adsorption experiments were carried out on methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. The results showed that the specific surface area of (CH3COO)2Zn-modified magnetic biochar MBC600 was enhanced from 381.4 to 799.7 m2·g-1, the pore volume from 0.27 to 0.46 cm3·g-1, and the saturated magnetization intensity from 13.20 to 18.18 emu·g-1. The maximum adsorption of MB by MBC600 at 25 ℃ was 344.06 mg·g-1, which was 4 times higher than that of the unmodified. The kinetic and thermodynamic fitting of the adsorption of MBC600 revealed that the adsorption of MB by MBC600 was mainly a monomolecular adsorption under the control of chemisorption. MB adsorption is via hydrogen bonding and cation exchange.
