Abstract The pulse tracing technique is used to determine the characteristics of the threephase innerloop biological fluidized bed. The internal liquid circulation is analyzed and the effects of the operating conditions, such as air flow rate Qg, solid content εs, and the crosssection area ratio of riser to downcomer Ar/Ad, on circle time TC are studied. Results show that with other operating conditions keeping constant,  TC is affected significantly by the operating Qg, εs and Ar/Ad, especially by Qg. TC decreases with the increase of Qg following an exponential decay curve obviously; while with the increase of  εs, TC and  Qg,min rise, especially when Qg > 96 L/h; TC prolongs with the increasing of Ar/Ad. The effects of Qg and εs on the biodegradation of wastewater are also discussed, the results give reference to the improvement, amplification and operation of  bioreactor.
