Abstract The pulse tracing technique is used to determine the characteristics of the threephase innerloop biological fluidized bed. The internal liquid circulation is analyzed and the effects of the operating conditions, such as air flow rate Qg, solid content εs, and the crosssection area ratio of riser to downcomer Ar/Ad, on circle time TC are studied. Results show that with other operating conditions keeping constant, TC is affected significantly by the operating Qg, εs and Ar/Ad, especially by Qg. TC decreases with the increase of Qg following an exponential decay curve obviously; while with the increase of εs, TC and Qg,min rise, especially when Qg > 96 L/h; TC prolongs with the increasing of Ar/Ad. The effects of Qg and εs on the biodegradation of wastewater are also discussed, the results give reference to the improvement, amplification and operation of bioreactor.
