Abstract The stress corrosion cracking(SCC) behaviors of sensitized 18Cr-8 Ni austenitic stainless steel in polythionic acid(H_2S_XO_6) were studied by means of constant-strain and constant-load tests with special attention to material composition, and environmental and M_(23)C_6 factors. It was found that the samples were quite susceptible to SCC in a medium of 2.06.0% H_2S_XO_6 with PH 0.81.8. The metallograph indicates that the cracking in this system is intergranular and the active dissolution of chromium-depleted regions along the grain boudaries is resnonsible for intergranulai SCC.
