Abstract This article briefly reviewed the blood coagulation procedure of intravascular polyurethane catheters, factors influencing it including stiffness, surface charge, lubricity, hydrophilic hydrophobic balance, and micro separated phase structure of PU.Otherwise this paper discussed emphatically some traditional and recent attempts to improve the antithrombogenicity of polyurethane, such as heparin immobilization, increasing the surface hydrophilicity, protein conditioning, heparinoid modification, and attachment of other biological actives.
