Abstract During the past decade,the rapid progress has been made in self-assembled polyelectrolyte multilayers (SAMs) based on electrostactic interaction. In this article,the research history,the preparation and characterization methods of SAMs were reviewed. The self-assembly mechanisms of SAMs and its applications were also introduced. Feasibility and sence of self-assembly of amphiphilic polyurethane were analysed.
