Abstract Several morphological analysis methods of filamentous microorganisms such as direct observation, digitizing table and image analysis were introduced in this paper.Image analysis reduces subjectivity and allows automation as a well established complement to manual operation.Meanwhile, some factors which influence on the morphology of filamentous microorganisms, such as agitation intensity, dissolved oxygen concentration and dilution rate, were also discussed here. Most studies on the effects of agitation intensity on fungal morphology were focused on the relation between hyphal length and specific energy dissipation rate.A shaving mechanism was proposed to explain the effects of agitation intensity on the morphology of pellets. The effects of agitation intensity and dissolved oxygen concentration on fungal morphology proved to be related. There is no common result on the effect of dilution rate on fungal morphology at present.
