Abstract In this paper,a new catalytic distillation process is studied on the production of methyl acetate from methanol and glacial acetic acid.The experiments were carried out in a glass column with an inner diameter of 76 mm.In the column,the rectifying section is filled with θ rings and the reactive section is composed of sieve plates to ensure high liquid holdups.The catalyst is fine particles of about 4 μm in diameter and forms slurry with glacial acetic acid.The effects of catalyst concentration,feed composition,total feed and reflux ratio on the conversion ratio are experimentally studied.The experimental results show that the conversion and the purity of methyl acetate in the distillate can reach 86.4% and 92.95%,respectively.
